Smart Cards as First-Class Network Citizens

چکیده
Recent proposals have been made to connect smart cards to the Internet, to meet needs that are not easily satisfied by current smart card interface standards. However, all these proposals require the use of off-card software to do the translation between the world of the Internet and that of the smart card (i.e., proxy architecture). In this paper we present an alternative approach, following the end-to-end argument. We implement entirely in the smart card, a TCP/IP stack, fully compliant with the mandatory features described in the RFCs. Some implementation choices and optimization techniques addressing smart card limitations are presented. Lastly, using a proof-ofconcept prototype, we show that this approach is indeed possible. Our results indicate the resources that are required.

Multi-stage Packet Filtering in Network Smart Cards
Network smart cards are smart cards with networking capabilities. They have opened new opportunities for the use of smart cards in Internet applications. At the same time, network smart cards are exposed to network security threats just as other computers on the Internet. Unfortunately, existing designs of network security mechanisms, such as packet filtering, may not be best suited for smart c...
متن کاملSmart Cards in Electronic Voting: Lessons Learned from Applications in Legallybinding Elections and Approaches Proposed in Scientific Papers
Recently, the interest in electronic voting has increased as more and more states have started to implement such systems. At the same time, classical national ID cards are often being replaced by national electronic ID cards which enable citizens to securely identify and authenticate themselves over the Internet. Despite their popularity, the possibility of using eID cards for e-voting has not ...
متن کاملIntegrating Anonymous Credentials with eIDs for Privacy-Respecting Online Authentication
Electronic Identity (eID) cards are rapidly emerging in Europe and are gaining user acceptance. As an authentication token, an eID card is a gateway to personal information and as such it is subject to privacy risks. Several European countries have taken extra care to protect their citizens against these risks. A notable example is the German eID card, which we take as a case study in this pape...
متن کاملApplication of Network Smart Cards to Citizens Identification Systems
This paper proposes a new authentication and authorization architecture based on a network smart card with identification purposes: IDNSCard. Thus, a citizen who holds this kind of device might be securely authenticated by a remote authoritative server in an identification system. This work shows how the standardized specifications are transparently reused and integrated in the proposed archite...
متن کاملHardware Attacks Against Smart Cards
In this report we discuss several hardware attacks against smart cards. We describe a number of successful attacks against cards such as pay-TV cards and pre-paid phone cards and how these attacks has since been mitigated. We have also looked into a class of attacks called Optical Fault Induction Attacks and described how they work and what a designer can do to prevent them.
